Guidelines
For
Students:
- The Sierra College
Writing Center is student-centered. The staff is dedicated to meeting
student writing needs across the curriculum.
- The Center is
open on a drop-in basis to Sierra College students and staff.
- Students log in
and out of the Writing Center by entering their student ID numbers or
scanning their student ID cards on the computer just inside the door.
- Student writers
must be present to receive assistance. Papers may not be dropped off
or sent by e-mail. Students working on a group project must be present
to have their portion of the project reviewed.
- Students receive
assistance on a first-come, first-served basis. During busy times, students
put their names on a waiting list to get help from a staff member. However,
when staff members are not busy, students should ask the staff directly
for help.
- Students may receive
assistance at any stage of the writing process, from idea generation
to final draft.
- Students should
type essay drafts, print them double-spaced, and proofread as best they
can.
- Students are taught
to edit their own papers and receive varying degrees of assistance according
to individual needs.
- Computers must
be used for educational purposes.
For
Faculty and Staff:
- Faculty may take
a copy of the Term Paper Handbook for MLA, APA or Chicago style,
or any of our handouts to the Printing Department to make class sets.
- Faculty in any
discipline may receive assistance with drafting writing assignments,
with techniques for grading papers, or with other writing issues.
- Classes may visit
the Writing Center in tour groups or early each semester with prior
notice.
- The staff will
make presentations to Sierra College classes on Writing Center services,
documentation styles, or other writing topics at the request of faculty
members.
Printing
Policies
- Students may
print up to 10 pages of material related to their writing projects.
- Printers should
not be used to print course lectures or PowerPoint slides or to make
multiple copies of a document.
